Last year’s finalist Taylor Fritz started his US Open campaign with a three-set victory. In an all-American clash, the fourth-seeded Taylor Fritz defeated wildcard Emilio Nava by 3-0 (7:5, 6:2, 6:3) in exactly two hours of play.
Taylor Fritz saved two break points in the first game of the match and this turned out to be practically the only critical moment for his entire match. He made 11 aces in the match, used Emilio Nava’s 44 unforced errors and realized four of his ten break points.
In the second round, Taylor Fritz will await the winner of the pair between Argentine Sebastian Baez and South African Lloyd Harris.
Ben Shelton (USA) also continues to advance in the tournament. The American, who is 6th-seeded, won by 3-0 (6:3, 6:4, 6:2) over Peruvian Ignacio Buse in 2 hours and 8 minutes. Ben Shelton made 35 winners to Buse’s 16, which is where the big difference between the two came from.
Ben Shelton’s next opponent, who played in the semifinals in New York in 2023, will be Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain), who eliminated his compatriot Pablo Llamas Ruiz by 3-0 (7:6, 6:4, 6:2).
ATP No 16 Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic, who defeated Nicolas Jarry of Chile by 3-0 (7:6(5), 6:3, 6:4), as well as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, have already secured a place in the second round. The Spaniard won by 3-0 (6:1, 6:1, 6:2) against Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan.
