The fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula showed signs of regaining her form and started her US Open campaign with a bang. The 31-year-old American tennis player defeated Mayar Sherif (Egypt) by 2-0 (6:0, 6:4) in just over an hour of play in the first round.
Jessica Pegula has had some rather lackluster performances, but a return to Flushing Meadows, where she reached her first Grand Slam final 12 months ago, seemed to give her a boost and she once again showed the strong tennis she is capable of.
Playing the evening session match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Jessica Pegula started brightly to win the first set by 6:0.
Things didn’t go well for the American in the second set, as she allowed a break and trailed 1:4. However, Jessica Pegula managed to regain her focus to win five games in a row and take the set by 6:4 and match by 2-0 (6:0, 6:4).
Her next opponent will be Anna Blinkova (Russia), who defeated Ukrainian talent Yuliia Starodubtseva by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) in another first-round clash on Sunday.
