Alexander Zverev will become the 30th tennis player to reach the world No 1 ranking next Monday, November 2. The German has made it certain that Monday will be the date of his ascension after reaching the quarterfinals of the Vienna Open. On Thursday, he defeated Tallon Griekspoor in the second round of the ATP 500 event.
“It’s very special. The feeling of being on top of the world is incredible. It’s different from winning a tournament or a title, but it’s such a special feeling to know that No. 1 will be next to your name when the new rankings come out”, said Alexander Zverev
Alexander Zverev will become the second-oldest tennis player to reach the world No. 1 for the first time. At 29 years and six months, he will be second only to John Newcombe, who was 30 when he reached the top in 1974 — a year after the ATP rankings were created. Zverev has won many of the sport’s biggest titles, including two ATP Finals titles, two Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal and seven Masters Series titles.
Now, more than four years after first reaching No 2 in the world, he can add to his resume the 30th member of the ATP No 1 Club. The future No 1 will overtake Yannick Sinner, who has held the top spot since April 13 during his current spell at the top. Zverev also secures the distinction of being No. 1 in the world at the end of the year.
The 29-year-old tennis player has risen to the top largely thanks to his success in the Grand Slams this year. He won his first two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open, and has also reached the Wimbledon final and the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
Alexander Zverev, who was also a finalist at the Madrid Masters this year, has a record of 64 wins and 16 losses in 2026. Only Daniil Medvedev has also reached the 50-win mark in a season. Alexander Zverev will become only the second German to become world No. 1, joining Boris Becker. His compatriot reached the top on January 28, 1991.
There will now be five active players in the ATP No 1 Club: Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic.
