Tallon Griekspoor failed to break his losing streak at the US Open. The 29-year-old tennis player from Haarlem lost in the first round to experienced Frenchman Adrian Mannarino by 0-3 (5:7, 4:6, 0:6). He continues to search for the form that brought him success earlier this year.
Adrian Mannarino started the match sharply and immediately took the initiative. With his characteristic left-handed versatility, he constantly forced Tallon Griekspoor to play defense. The Dutchman had to save several break points early on and quickly found himself in the role of catch-up. Although he managed to get back into the set and level at 5-5, the Frenchman struck again and took the opening set 7-5.
In the second set, Tallon Griekspoor initially managed to get into a rhythm. His serve worked a little better and he won his own service games relatively easily. However, he found little resistance to Adrian Mannarino’s service games, who remained extremely cool in the longer games and constantly raised the tension with strong returns. At 5:4, however, things went wrong again: Tallon Griekspoor lost his serve and fell behind in the set 6:4. Irritated, he briefly retreated to the locker room to regroup, but the break did not bring the desired turn.
After the short break, Adrian Mannarino set the tone again. The Frenchman struck a lightning strike with a game to zero and broke Tallon Griekspoor’s serve without any problems. Especially with his iron returns, he kept the Dutchman under constant pressure. In no time the score became 4:0, although Tallon Griekspoor had one chance to break through in this phase. Adrian Mannarino coolly saved it, then increased his lead to 5:0.
Tallon Griekspoor then had to serve to avoid a “pretzel” (6:0), but he failed completely. With three double faults he also surrendered his last service game. For Tallon Griekspoor it was a painful defeat and another confirmation of his ongoing crisis in form.
