The 11th-seed Holger Rune advanced to the second round of the US Open. The Danish tennis player defeated Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in three sets – 3-0 (6:3, 7:6(4), 7:6(2)). Holger Rune will next face Jan-Lennard Struff (Germany), who defeated Mackenzie McDonald (USA) by 3-1 (3:6, 7:6(4), 6:3, 6:3).
Holger Rune broke early in the first set, which was returned in the seventh game, but a rebreak immediately followed. Serving for the set, the Danish tennis player had serious difficulties, but managed to close the set in his favor.
The second set was even, with Holger Rune missing the only two break points. However, in the tiebreak, he imposed his will and put Botic van de Zandschulp in an even more difficult situation.
In the third set, the Dutchman fell behind 0:4, but found the strength to reach another tiebreak. There, however, Holger Rune was very convincing and secured a place in the next round.
Frances Tiafoe also moves ahead in the US Open. The American defeated Yoshihito Nishioka (Japan) by 3-0 (6:3, 7:6(6), 6:3). The two-time semifinalist in New York hit 19 aces and won 84% of the first serve points.
Jaume Munar, Kamil Majchrzak, Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev also qualified for the next round. Flavio Cobolli won the Italian clash with Francesco Passaro in five sets – 3-2 (7:5, 4:6, 6:4, 3:6, 6:3), and Adam Walton defeated the 22nd-seeded Ugo Humbert by 3-1 (6:4, 7:6(4), 5:7, 6:1).
