The two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova advanced to the second round of the US Open. The Czech tennis player defeated Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2). The 29-year-old Barbora Krejcikova used her considerable experience against the Canadian to find her rhythm in a season plagued by injuries.
Victoria Mboko beat four Grand Slam champions on her way to the Montreal title, but now she was unable to hold her own against the Czech in her first appearance in New York.
“I saw her in Montreal and all that she achieved there. It was really great of her. I’m happy with my performance”, said Barbora Krejcikova, who made four breaks in her match against Mboko.
The Czech will next play with Moyuka Uchijima (Japan).
Elena Rybakina also advanced to the second round. The 9th-seeded player from Kazakhstan easily defeated American wildcard Julieta Pareja by 2-0 (6:3, 6:0).
Sixth-seeded Madison Keys, the reigning Australian Open champion, was eliminated in the first round of the tournament. The American tennis player lost by 1-2 (7:6(10), 6:7(3), 5:7) to Renata Zarazua in 3 hours and 12 minutes, committing 89 unforced errors. In the third set, the Mexican was leading 5:3, but Madison Keys tied the score at 5:5. Renata Zarazua again broke her opponent and won by 7:5.
Madison Keys will next face Diane Parry, who defeated Petra Kvitova by 2-0 (6:1, 6:0).
The 19th-seeded Elise Mertens also advanced to the second round of the US Open. The Belgian easily defeated wildcard Alyssa Ahn (USA) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:0). Elise Mertens will next face Lulu Sun (New Zealand).
