The first round of the US Open brought several interesting results and surprises, as well as records, and one of them was the work of a tennis player from Hong Kong. Coleman Wong made history by qualifying for the main draw of the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. He became the first tennis player from this country to achieve this.
However, Coleman Wong wrote another page in history after he managed to defeat Aleksandar Kovacevic, a tennis player of Serbian origin who competes for the United States, in the first round. The 21-year-old Coleman Wong prevailed by 3-0 (6:4, 7:5, 7:6(4)) in two hours and 28 minutes of play and became the first tennis player from Hong Kong in the Open Еra to record a victory in the main draw of any Grand Slam tournament.
Coleman Wong is currently ranked 173rd in the world and had never before passed the second round of qualifying at a “major” tournament. He has not won a single title in his career, and his best ranking is 128th in the ATP rankings as of September 2024.
Interestingly, Coleman Wong was the US Open junior doubles champion in 2021.
