Jannik Sinner extended his winning streak on hard courts to 23 matches after defeating Gabriel Diallo (Canada) with 2-0 (6:2, 7:6(6)) to advance to the Round of 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati tennis tournament.
The 23-year-old Canadian player put up a strong fight against the world number one, who is defending his title from last season. The two were seriously hampered by the heat and humidity, but they created a very interesting match that did not let the fans get bored.
The start of the match was delayed by more than an hour due to a power outage. Jannik Sinner started hesitantly and allowed an early break after making three double faults in the second game.
The Italian player quickly got into a rhythm and won the next six games, and with that the first set by 6:2.
The second set was completely even, and the 203 cm tall Gabriel Diallo had a set point, but Jannik Sinner saved it and eventually took his place.
In the Round of 16, Jannik Sinner will face Adrian Mannarino (France), who eliminated the 13th-seeded Tommy Paul (USA) by 2-1 (5:7, 6:3, 6:4).
