World’s number one Jannik Sinner secured his place in history with his Wimbledon triumph after a 3-1 (4:6, 6:4, 6:4, 6:4) victory over his long-time rival Carlos Alcaraz. The Italian from South Tyrol joined the very special group of few tennis players to win a Grand Slam title on different surfaces.
Unlike the dramatic and epic final at Roland Garros between the two, this time Jannik Sinner was the man to pull off a comeback, albeit “only” by a set. Neither the drama nor the unforgettable performances were on the same level this time, but the Italian-Spanish duel once again offered many quality performances to the spectators.
Carlos Alcaraz could not win Wimbledon for the third time in a row and recorded his first loss in the tournament since 2022. Ironically, Jannik Sinner could not have participated in the title match at all, as he was losing 0-2 sets in the round of 16 and was completely outplayed by Grigor Dimitrov before the Bulgarian was unfortunately injured.
Jannik Sinner is the first Italian to win a singles title at the All England Club – Matteo Berrettini lost his final in 2021 to Novak Djokovic, and last year Jasmine Paolini lost the women’s final to Barbora Krejcikova.
Jannik Sinner already has four Grand Slam titles – two in Australia this year and last year, one in the US last year and one now in London. At the moment, he and Carlos Alcaraz continue the trend from last season of sharing the “major” trophies. The Spaniard will pursue his sixth Grand Slam title in New York later this year, after winning Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the US Open twice.
Carlos Alcaraz could not repeat Bjorn Borg’s achievement of 1978 and 1979, when the great Swede won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in two consecutive seasons.
