Jan-Lennard Struff secured the biggest victory of his career by stunning 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in a dramatic three-set thriller at the 2026 Swiss Indoors Basel. The big-serving German bounced back from losing a tense opening set to prevail 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-6(5) in front of a captivated crowd at the Ariake Coliseum-style indoor arena on Thursday night. The second-round blockbuster lasted two hours and 36 minutes, marking Struff’s first-ever triumph over the legendary Serbian in nine career meetings.
The opening set was a masterclass in modern indoor tennis, defined entirely by dominant serving from both ends. Neither player could manage a single break of serve as they matched each other blow for blow to force a tiebreak. Djokovic, playing in Basel for the first time since 2011, showcased his signature baseline precision and clinical defensive skills to navigate the high-pressure moments. He claimed the tiebreak 7-4, capitalizing on a few rare mistakes from the German to take a one-set lead and seemingly put himself in the driver’s seat.
Struff, however, refused to yield to past history. Entering the match with a discouraging 0-8 head-to-head record against Djokovic—admitting afterwards that his previous encounters had mostly ended in one-sided losses—he stuck firmly to an ultra-aggressive game plan. Relying on a relentlessly powerful delivery, Struff hammered an astounding 27 aces throughout the contest to keep Djokovic at bay. The breakthrough finally came at the tail end of the second set. Serving at 5-6, Djokovic faltered slightly under severe pressure, allowing Struff to secure the first and only break of the entire match to snatch the set 7-5 and level the score.
The deciding third set returned to an absolute stalemate. Djokovic matched Struff’s serving intensity, firing 21 aces of his own and denying the German any further look at a break point. With no break points conceded by either side in the final frame, the outcome came down to a nerve-wracking final tiebreak. Struff quickly gained the upper hand with deep, fearless groundstrokes and clinical placement. Though Djokovic fought valiantly to close the gap, Struff remained faultless on his own delivery, firing a precise ball into the corner on match point to wrap up the tiebreak 7-5 and lock in the historic upset.
This shocking defeat deals a severe blow to Djokovic’s aspirations for the season-ending championships. The 39-year-old veteran is locked in a fierce battle to qualify for a record 19th appearance at the ATP Finals in Turin but currently sits 11th in the live standings. Meanwhile, the victory advances the 36-year-old Struff into the quarterfinals in Basel, where he is scheduled to play Portugal’s Nuno Borges.
