
Emma Navarro is an American professional tennis player, who has a career-high singles ranking of world No 8 by the WTA, achieved on September 9, 2024. She played college tennis at Virginia and won the NCAA Singles Championship in 2021, later becoming the first women’s singles NCAA champion to reach the US Open semifinals.
Emma Navarro won her first and only WTA Tour title at the WTA 250 Hobart International in 2024.
Emma Navarro was born on May 18, 2001, in New York City, United States. She is a child of Ben and Kelly Navarro and started in tennis as a kid. Emma Navarro attended Ashley Hall, an all-girls private school in downtown Charleston, where she played on the varsity tennis team. During her junior career, she won titles at the USTA National Open in West Hartford and Columbus in 2013, the USTA National Selection Tournament in 2014, as well as USTA National Spring Tournament (Easter Bowl), J60 Lexington \ South Carolina ITF, and J60 Boca Raton \ Evert American ITF Junior Circuit in 2017. In 2018, Emma Navarro won the titles at the J200 Montreal \ U18 Montreal World Ranking Event, National Clay Court Championships, J300 Indian Wells \ Fila International Junior Championships, and Southern Winter Level 1 Championships BG 18.
Emma Navarro finished as runner-up at the French Open / Roland Garros in 2019 but also reached the semi-finals of the Junior Wimbledon. During the 2019 season, she also made her professional debut, playing in the WTA 250 Credit One Charleston Open, but lost in the first round. In the ITF Circuit, she reached the semi-finals at the $100,000 W100 Charleston (USA) and the quarter-finals of the $25,000 W25 Florence (USA).
Emma Navarro was rated as the best tennis recruit in the nation and joined the Virginia Cavaliers for the fall of 2020 after having previously committed to Duke. In her freshman year, she went 25–1 in singles and reached the No 1 ranking in the country. She avenged her only loss of the season in the final of the 2021 NCAA singles championship, beating defending champion Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami. She was named the ITA Rookie of the Year and was a finalist for the Honda Sports Award. She played also in the main draw of the WTA 250 Abierto GNP Seguros, but again lost in the first round.
With her NCAA win, she earned a wild card into the 2021 US Open main draw where she made her Grand Slam tournament debut, where lost in the first round. During the season, Emma Navarro won her first professional title at the $25,000 W25 Orlando (USA), but also played in the quarter-finals of the $60,000 W60 Charleston (USA), $60,000 W60 Amstelveen (Netherlands), WTA 125 LTP Women’s Open, $25,000 W25 Fort Worth (USA), and $60,000 W60 Berkeley (USA). She also reached the second rounds of the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open and WTA 250 MUSC Health Women’s Open.
In 2022, Emma Navarro won another ITF title at the $60,000 W60 Liepaja (Latvia) but also debuted at the Masters’ tournament WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open. She was also the runner-up at the $60,000 W60 Amstelveen (Netherlands) and $60,000 W60 Montreux (Switzerland).
After gaining experience in the previous seasons, Emma Navarro started winning titles at the ITF Circuit in 2023. She triumphed at the $25,000 W35 Naples (USA), $100,000 W100 Charleston (USA), $60,000 W75 Charlottesville (USA), and $80,000 W80 Tyler (USA). She also reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Cymbiotika San Diego Open and WTA 250 Bad Homburg Open presented by Engel & Volkers, the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Palermo Ladies Open and WTA 250 Internationaux de Strasbourg, and the third round of the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open. Emma Navarro played also in the main draw of the French Open / Roland Garros, reaching the second round, and Wimbledon and the US Open, losing in the first round. However, after her strong season, she entered the Top 100 and finished the season as the world’s No 32.
In 2024, Emma Navarro made her breakthrough in world tennis, winning her first WTA title at the WTA 250 Hobart International, but before she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 ASB Classic. She reached the third round of the Australian Open and the WTA 1000 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, as well as the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Cymbiotika San Diego Open. At the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, she played in the quarter-finals, while at the WTA 1000 Miami Open, she reached the third round, climbing more in the WTA ranking. Emma Navarro reached the fourth round of the French Open / Roland Garros but made a fantastic tournament at Wimbledon, where reached the quarter-finals. She didn’t stop and played in the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open / Rogers Cup and WTA 500 Abierto GNP Seguros, before reaching also the semis of the US Open. Thus, Emma Navarro climbed to the world’s No 8.
Emma Navarro started 2025 season strongly, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and winning her first WTA 500 title at the Merida Open Akron.
