Alexander Zverev, who is aiming to win his first Grand Slam title, has advanced to the third round of the US Open. The German eliminated Jacob Fearnley by 3-0 (6:4, 6:4, 6:4), and will next face Felix Auger Aliassime, who eliminated Roman Safiullin by 3-0 (6:1, 7:6(5), 7:6(4)).
Alexander Zverev remained in control throughout the 2:28 hours match, creating 14 break points and converting five of them. The 28-year-old tennis star secured victory on his sixth match point.
“He’s a player who, when he plays well, he plays really well”, said Alexander Zverev for Felix Auger Aliassime. “When he doesn’t play well, he really doesn’t play well. He’s in the third round, which means he’s playing well. It’s going to be a tough match, but I think historically this matchup has been pretty comfortable for me. I hope it will be like that in two days”, added he.
With 45 wins this season, Alexander Zverev is only behind Carlos Alcaraz (56) in the number of matches won. The German has yet to drop a set in his two matches at Flushing Meadows. He saved all six break points against Alejandro Tabilo in the first round and was broken twice against Jacob Fearnley.
“I think my level is good”, said Alexander Zverev. “It’s decent. I know the opponents will get extremely difficult as the tournament progresses and a lot of things will change, but I’m happy with my level in these two matches”, added he.
Felix Auger Aliassime won consecutive matches in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros last year.
Eighth-seeded Alex de Minaur also advanced with a convincing 3-0 (6:2, 6:4, 6:2) victory over Shintaro Mochizuki (Japan). The Australian, who made just 23 unforced errors to Mochizuki ‘s 50, will face Daniel Altmaier, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets 3-2 (7:6(5), 1:6, 4:6, 6:3, 7:5).
