Daniil Medvedev produced another commanding display at the ATP 500 Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Friday, defeating Adrian Mannarino in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to secure his place in the semi-finals. The Russian star delivered a composed and efficient performance, controlling the match from the outset and reinforcing his status as one of the tournament’s leading contenders.
Coming into the quarter-final clash, Medvedev faced a confident Mannarino, who had enjoyed an impressive run in Vienna after advancing through the qualifying rounds and claiming notable victories earlier in the week. However, against the former world No. 1, the French veteran found it difficult to impose his trademark flat groundstrokes and quick-court instincts. Medvedev’s consistency from the baseline and superior defensive skills repeatedly forced Mannarino into uncomfortable positions.
The Russian made his intentions clear from the very beginning. In a lengthy opening game, he immediately applied pressure on Mannarino’s serve and eventually converted his fifth break-point opportunity. That early breakthrough set the tone for the remainder of the first set. Using his trademark deep returns and remarkable court coverage, Medvedev dictated most of the rallies and prevented Mannarino from finding any rhythm.
Although the Frenchman battled hard and attempted to engage Medvedev in longer exchanges, the third seed remained in complete control. A second break allowed him to extend his advantage, and he closed out the opening set 6-2 with minimal difficulty. Throughout the set, Medvedev showed excellent timing on both wings and displayed the patience that has become one of the hallmarks of his game.
The second set proved more competitive, with Mannarino raising his level and holding serve more comfortably during the early stages. For several games, both players maintained solid service performances, keeping the score level at 3-3. Yet just when the Frenchman appeared capable of making the contest more interesting, Medvedev once again elevated his game.
A crucial break in the seventh game shifted momentum decisively in the Russian’s favor. Mannarino continued to fight but could not create a single break-point opportunity during the match, highlighting Medvedev’s effectiveness on serve and his ability to avoid pressure situations. From 4-3 ahead, the Russian closed the contest in clinical fashion, winning the final four games and sealing victory after one hour and 34 minutes.
The statistics reflected Medvedev’s dominance. He struck four aces, committed only one double fault, and converted four of his eleven break-point chances. Mannarino managed two aces but struggled to penetrate Medvedev’s defensive wall or gain any meaningful opportunities on return.
With the 6-2, 6-3 triumph, Medvedev improved his head-to-head record against Mannarino to 6-4 and moved one step closer to another Vienna title, having previously lifted the trophy in 2022. The victory also continued his strong late-season form and underlined why he remains one of the most dangerous players on indoor hard courts.
Awaiting Medvedev in the semi-finals is the winner of the match between Tommy Paul and Carlos Alcaraz. Regardless of who advances, the Russian’s convincing performance against Mannarino sends a clear message to the rest of the field: Daniil Medvedev is playing some of his best tennis of the season and looks fully capable of claiming another ATP 500 crown in Vienna.
