Jack Draper has advanced to the second round of the US Open. The fifth-seeded Briton defeated qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez by 3-1 (6:4, 7:5, 6:7(7), 6:2). The 2024 US Open semifinalist is playing for the first time since Wimbledon due to a hand injury. The 23-year-old Jack Draper faltered in the match but was decisive in his dominance against the Argentine in the fourth set, scoring two breaks.
The British tennis player made a strong start and finished the match in just over three hours. The Argentine saved a match point on his serve in the third-set tiebreak.
“It wasn’t my strongest performance, but that’s also due to my opponent, who played an incredible game. I hope to improve as the tournament goes on. I’m glad to be back on the court because I wasn’t sure I could play here”, said Jack Draper after the win.
The Briton will next face Zizou Bergs. The Belgian defeated Tseng Chun-hsin of Taiwan by 3-0 (6:3, 6:4, 6:3).
Cameron Norrie (Great Britain) also advances in the second round after a 2-0 (7:5, 6:4) win in the first two sets against Sebastian Korda, who retired immediately after with an injury.
Brazilian tennis player Joao Fonseca made 51 winning shots and defeated Miomir Kecmanovic (Serbia) by 3-0 (7:6(3), 7:6(5), 6:3).
